May 2022 - City of Sanctuary

City of Sanctuary was started in 2005 in Sheffield, and with the support of the council and over 70 local community organisations, the city became the UK’s first ever City of Sanctuary. Since then, hundreds of local councils, schools, universities, libraries, theatres and more have been awarded with Sanctuary status, pledging to create a culture of solidarity, inclusivity and welcome.

Their networks include community groups, local authorities, Sanctuary Ambassadors and Streams of Sanctuary networks e.g. Universities of Sanctuary. These networks are working towards a shared vision and are committed to embedding the City of Sanctuary network principles within public spaces, while also having the flexibility to develop responses to the challenges within their specific context.

Back in February we welcomed the Swansea branch of City of Sanctuary to Hoogah as we pledged our support, while raising awareness of the Show Your Heart Campaign ran by Together With Refugees. Local councillor Irene Mann, MS Sioned Williams and Helen Clancy, the Migration, Asylum Seeker and Refugee Coordinator at Swansea Council joined us to show their support towards the campaign. The Orange Heart Campaign shows support against the Anti Refugee Bill that was recently approved in the House of Commons.

This bill demonises people feeling for their lives, discriminating people seeking asylum based on how they get to the UK. We are proud to call Swansea a place of safety, a “City of Sanctuary” - together with City of Sanctuary and the Council we want to ensure everyone is aware of this and are proud of the amazing work being done to ensure those seeking refuge and support have it available to them.

We created this delicious orange heart pizza in support of their campaign, which we will now be bringing to you this May to raise funds for City of Sanctuary Swansea.

To raise money throughout May for City of Sanctuary our Pizza and Cocktail additions are -

Pizza - Squash, Feta, Rocket, Harissa Oil and Toasted Seeds on our sourdough pizza base with homemade tomato pizza sauce.

Cocktail - Brecon Gin, FAIR Vodka with charred lemon, homemade ginger syrup and mint, topped with soda water.

All profits from these Charity Specials will be donated to City of Sanctuary.
